The waters in and around Pacific Rim National Park are famous for fishing!

There are 5 species of salmon locally, with sports fishermen usually targeting Coho and Chinook from May until September. Halibut and ling cod highlight the variety of bottom species fished in west coast waters. While the focus in the park area is on tidal water fishing, there are Cutthroat Trout available in streams throughout the region.

Please ensure that you are properly licensed and that you adhere strictly to area and seasonal closures, regulations and limits set out in the "Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing Guide". Saltwater fishing in the park is presently regulated by the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as described in the "British Columbia Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Guide". This guide includes information concerning licensing, spot closures, bag limits, identification of species and shellfish harvesting and its closures, and is available from:

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans
Suite 400, 555 W. Hastings Street
Vancouver
BC V6B SG3

Note: Commercial shellfish harvesting is prohibited in national park waters.

Always check with the federal fisheries agent for the area you will be fishing for local closures:

Tofino - (250) 725-3468
Port Alberni - (250) 724-0195

Freshwater fishing in the park is governed by licensing and regulations set out in the Provincial Ministry of Environment's "Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis" which is available from:

Recreational Fisheries Branch
Ministry of Environment
Parliament Buildings
Victoria
BC V8V lX5

Also contact the Conservation Officer Service District Office in Port Alberni, (250) 724-9290 for information specific to the various regions encompassed within the national park.

Fishing charters and rentals operate out of the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet), both adjacent to the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park. Bamfield, Port Alberni and Port Renfrew also provide charters and rentals.

If you are bringing your own boat or renting a boat locally, ensure that you are very familiar with local weather and ocean conditions.
